The book
It’s the almanac for the year 2009, with the events of ten, one hundred, two hundred, three hundred… and more years ago in the lands of the former Austro-Hungarian coastline.
Trieste and the territory of present Venezia Giulia, Gorizia and Gradisca d’Isonzo with the land once called “Austrian Friuli”, Istria, the Quarner and its islands; with a big (30x69cm) spiral bound calendar enclosed, printed on fine gardamatt cardboard, with photographs, postcards, period pictures and more.
Every month is devoted to a specific subject. January “Sweet recipes (in Triestinian dialect)”, February “In days of Austria-Hungary”, March “Trieste and Gorizia as seen through literature”, April “Carso herbs in the popular tradition”, May “Empress Maria Theresa and the other Habsburgs, June “Maximilian, Charlotte and Miramare”, July “Trieste, the gulf and Gorizia in period postcards”, August “Emperor Francis Joseph”, September “The Triestinian dialect songs”, October “The Bora”, November “Savoury recipes (in Triestinian dialect)”, December “Elisabeth of Bayern, Princess Sissi”.

The author
Alessandro Ambrosi, born 1955 in Gorizia, has been living in Trieste since the age of two. A freelance journalist, he has published and edited several books. He is also a bookseller with a passion for studying cartography, popular and local traditions with a special interest in the land areas along the Italian oriental border and their link to the past.
